        Chlorophyll a is the most commonly used indicator of phytoplankton biomass in the marine environment. It is relatively simple and cost effective to measure when compared to phytoplankton abundance. The problems connected with the study of phytoplankton for species composition and volumetric determination of the biomass are discussed. A simplified method of the Uterm6hl technique is reported, where a limited number of species is counted, covering about 90 % or more of the total volume of phytoplankton.

        Scenedesmus and Selenastrum species gave about 20% higher concentrations of chlorophyll a using this method as compared to the standard 90% acetone procedure or grinding in DMSO only.
